- Back late last year, this was a big topic. I watched and noted that
- it was pretty much universal that the MFC III and SS did not work
- together. That was back with SS v3.3. My MFC was in the shop at the
- time, so I just noted it. I was currently using my plain Amiga serial
- port via "artser.device" and got MacPPP and NCSA Telnet, Netscape, etc.
- up and running...
-
- Well, I have gotten back to my SS (v3.4 now!) and the new MFC III (they had
- to send me two before they got me one that worked!) and remembered those
- stories from last fall. I carefully setup use of the MFC instead of the
- regular Amiga serial port. I had also upgraded to a USR Sportser v.34
- along the way too.
-
- I have been able to use the SS --> MFC --> USR to world OK as long as
- I only pick 19200 in the MacPPP config. If I choose 28800 it does not
- see the modem at all. I can even get my expired copy of Netscape
- v2.0beta to connect to it's home page for one or two pages. But as soon
- as I try to download Netscape v2.01 it locks up my SS/Amiga.
-
- I also tried using NCSA's FTP to directly ftp download from one of
- Netscape's servers but it too only starts transfering a few K bytes
- before it stops and usually locks up both SS and the Amiga.
-
- I then downloaded the 2 MB+ HQX file directly to my local ISP
- provider shell account. I then tried to download it from there and still
- can not FTP it to my SS system. However, I was able to use ZTerm to
- Zmodem download the HQX file to my SS. It was not recognized as a valid
- binHex file with Stuffit though. :( I have not tried others like
- CompacPro, etc. which have usually worked better for me anyway. More
- later on that...
-
- So, I am confused. Does my MFC III/PPP setup work with SS or not? I
- got lots of CRC errors in the Zmodem download, but I think it fixed them
- and worked. But, PPP connections seem to be very unstable. Has anyone
- else tried SS v3.4 with their MFC III or has everyone already given up?

- p.s. I had such back luck with the printer via the MFC card I have
- avoided it completely this time and stick with the stock Amiga port. It
- works fine anyway. :) I did not set up the printer port on SS yet at all
- so I can't offer any comments there.
